Ready made auction PHP script or Custom made? Difference?

what is the difference from buying a ready made auction PHP script (like PhpPRObid.com) to hiring a programming company to do it for you???

Would this affect the quality of it? I have found several scripts that fullfil all my requirements for an auction website, but im not sure what is best?

In the long term, does it make any difference? or would i face copywrite problems if i needed to edit or add to a php script?

I am not a programmer, so please try to explain in detail. Thanks in advance!

Before you try either one of those, have a long look at Drupal, and specifically, the e-Commerce module, which includes the ability to run your own auctions (along with a lot of other things). PHP/MySQL based, open source, and free.

Well this is called off the shelf vs custom. Off the shelf scripts can be purchased or shared depending on the licensing. Now what you need to do is to as the seller of the script that "Am I allowed to make changes / addition" it is up to the person / company who is selling you these scripts. If you develop the script yourself then the options are unlimited with what you can do with the script that you develop. But if the script is doing what you want it to do and if you think that you can not program one in time or it might cost you alot of time then its a good option to get a ready made script, but before getting that script email the customer service of that company or that invidual to ask for permission to change. Good Luck :)

Clearly if something fulfills all your requirements, then that is going to be the most expeditious and cost effective, not to mention risk averse solution.

PHP is an interpreted serverside language. As there’s no compilation, by default you get the source code when you buy a PHP script. There are some technologies that will encrypt/encode the scripts so that you can’t read or modify source. This is out of the norm in my experience, but you would want to verify whether you’ll receive the unencrypted source before you buy.

In general my feeling is that php5 is the platform you want to be using. There are far more php4 scripts than php5 at this juncture. Whether or not this is important to you probably is relevant to how important modifications may be to the success of your business.

In my opinion, the best strategy for you, would be to find a php/mysql expert who will consult with you in regards to your purchase and implementation. This is no different than taking a used car to your mechanic for an expert opinion.
