What is "Joomla" in the context of web design?

Joomla is a term or name used to define a particular web development. What does it stand for?

    I don’t think that Joomla stands for anything. It is the English spelling of the Arabic word jumla (جملة) meaning "all together" or "as a whole", as well as "sentence" (as in, phrase).

    It’s a content management system (CMS). It provides you the framework of a web site with news flashes, blogs, polls, search, etc. The idea is that all you have to do is install it on the server, then add information to it, such as your web site’s name, perhaps customize it with a theme, and viola! Instant web site. No need to write your own. This way you don’t have to do the mundane part of programming your own web site from scratch. The site and the functionality are provided. You just "fill in the blanks" as it were.
