I’ve found its faster to start with a base that has already been created, however you do need to make sure whatever you use is licensed to allow you to modify and build on it. Checking its security is also a good idea.

If you want to build your own on top of an existing base then you won’t want to use a complete CMS package.

An option worth consideration is the Mambo Lite. This is the Mambo CMS, Lite version, which is the base core of Mambo without extra’s such as WYSIWYG editors or any of the core extensions. Those can be added as optional extensions (they can be useful to refer to when developing your own). It provides a solid base for further development and because its licensed under the GNU/GPL you are free to do so.

Mambo Lite, version 4.6.4 can be downloaded from here: http://mambo-code.org/gf/project/mambo/
That site also has a link to the API for 4.6.4 which provides a good reference for your own development.

Joomla 1.5 is worth looking at for the framework but if you plan on rolling out your own it is overkill as many of the features are built-in and can’t just be removed. As a framework, there are faster ones out there that have a much smaller footprint.

When considering whether to go for ready-made, make a list of the features you want then do some research. There is a lot of choice with free, open source CMS and each have strengths and weaknesses. There’s nothing quite like coding your own though ;)

If you have lots of time then sure, code it yourself. It’s fun and a nice way to learn a lot about PHP/ASP/whatever you choose.

But if you wish to have it done more quickly, check out http://www.opensourcecms.com/ which has reviews of various CMS systems.

hey! in our practicum in college, we developed a website for the university and we used a joomla! for the site but we modified it so as to meet the standards of the unviersity.. you can use the joomla! templates.. it’s fun and exciting.. You have also to code in joomla! if you want to customize the template…
