Building an online web portal community?

I am looking for online web software (either open source or paid) to build an online web portal system for users. I am not sure if there is something out there or not to do so but this is what i had in mind.

I would like a user to visit the site and register himself as a member and that then creates a sub domain for that user. Then he/she can use that to post information etc.

I assume something in the line of a CMS is what I would be using but up until now I cant figure what to use. I have looked at many but but any suggestions would be great and if I maybe have come across any in the list below that i might have missed (i.e though a plug-in or something) can you also please let me know.

The ones I have tried are: Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, eZ Publish, TYPO3, Mambo, Jaws, Xoops, phpFox and a few others but none seem to do what I would like.

The idea is that I have some friends that would like to build blog or share content with other friends or people online (people viewing would not need to register, but just the ones who would like a sub domain and share would have to). I know this sounds a little like social networking, but is slightly geared towards being more personal and customizable.

Thanks :-)

WordPress Multi User (http://mu.wordpress.org) does exactly what you are describing with no customization necessary.

You can also extend it by adding BuddyPress, which is basically the social network component for WordPress.

I actually just wrote an article about WPMU today.

Any of the CMS’s which you mention would work, but you will have to do some custom scripting. There is not out-of-the-box solution.
