Can you please help me install Apache modules?
I have started work on drupal and it seems I need a little Apache configuration knowledge. I need to implement this "Allow from address" so that I can block certain ip addresses but I don’t know which file to edit.
System = Linux Ubuntu 10.04
SO the idea is to block access to certain node (pages). To do this I’ll need to implement the mod.
Will open source make a dead end to web developers?
I see the open source usage is rising very quickly in the field of web development
many so called web development companies do nothing than installing an open source script just like joomla, drupal, word press, etc .. and just configuring it and selling it as their own developed software
this make the real web developers hard to compete cause open source CMS are full of feature can’t be developed easily
and the real custom web development is declining
is this the end of real web programming and development?
PHP CMS and Open Source – Profiting?
I have spent the last year and several months developing a content management in PHP. It technically was finished a long time ago, and I continued to go back and revise it, a few times from the ground up.
I originally intended to use this for personal sites here and there, as most other CMS’ I’ve used were large, bloated, and very resource intensive ( Joomla for example ). Though I loved Joomla, I just can’t afford to use it anymore with more than one site on VPS hosting.
The CMS I made now is kind of like a mixture between Joomla, WordPress and Drupal; all the best rolled into one much smaller package. So far from testing, it runs faster than either of the three listed and has most all the same features. It can be extended with components and plugins very easily ( like Joomla, but much, much easier ), supports SEF out of the box with complete control over URL structure, etc. It has alot of useful features I didn’t find in either package as well; resources to create and maintain backups of site settings and database, etc.
I have spent so much time optimizing ( about the last 6 months on optimizing alone ) and page caching. A cached page generates one database query by default, a non cached page generates two ( this is before or after logging in ).
Not to mention, the CMS by default has alot of Ajaxed features. The admin ( in which you can rename and relocate for security ) has alot of nice Ajax for managing, adding pages, etc. It also has a forum component that natively integrates with the CMS, which too uses some good Ajax implementation.
So far it runs REALLY good, I am thoroughly impressed with the final product. My question is, since I am in need of money and don’t want to sell the script ( it WILL be open source ), what is the best way to make a profit from Open Source without making it a commercial product? Do ads like Adsense really do any good? Those interested probably will know exactly what the ads are and definetly won’t click them, so how else can you make money from such a product?
hand coded websites or using CMS?
Im a student, and and apart of my course studying web developing. My skills in Html/css are very good and I’m still learning php – everything hand coded. As Im gaining more confidence and doing small side projects for clients, i also notice that heaps of websites are using some sort of CMS now. I always feel like im getting one step further then one step back Now i dont know if what Im doing is the right way, and its kind of anoying knowing that I learn all these skills and most are using software. Am I doing things the right way or should I be using wordpress or drupal for everything
Building Websites Parttime – What I need to know?
I want to start building, and possibly hosting and maintaining, websites for a part time gig. Right now I plan on focusing on creating small sites for small businesses in my geographical area that are not on the web right now.
I have gone through HTML and CSS and have a good handle on it, But what Else do I need to know before I start to build a portfolio of Faux sites to show my abilities? I have some Flash experience and will gain more as I go.
What about Drupal, or dreamweaver? What do I need to know to create a site my customers can update themselves?
Should I learn how to build a website myself or hire a company?
I am currently a student (not in Computer Science though) and have an idea of a website I want to build. I have a basic understanding of HTML and some CSS, but the site I want to build is a community driven website and sort of complex.
I am intimidated by the more complexities of the site (such as my lack of knowledge in MySQL/databases).
I have downloaded and tinkered with a variety of content management systems to help build the site (all freeware – including Drupal and Joomla), but I am still having some troubles.
So basically I am asking – Should I invest the time to learn the languages and figure out the content management systems OR should I just invest the small amount of money I have into a design firm to build the site?
Oh, and if I choose to build the site, which content management system do you recommend for an amateur like myself?
(The idea of the site is similar to digg, reddit and del.icio.us, but probably most similar to this very site- Yahoo! Answers)
